Tree Lighting and Service of Lessons and Carols

Tree Lighting PhotoFirst, Saint Nicholas arrives (usually by firetruck, since we do things differently here in the South).  Then, as the choir and marching band lead, the Huntingdon community gathers around the front of Flowers Hall and sings Christmas carols as the decorated trees come to life. Next, the crowd moves inside Ligon Chapel for the beautiful Service of Lessons and Carols, led by the Concert Choir and interspersed with nine Biblical readings, following the tradition of the service held annually at King’s College, Cambridge, England.  Hot spiced cider, hot chocolate, and Christmas cookies round out the festivities, as “St. Nick’s helpers” escort visiting children for their time with St. Nick.  The festivities ring in the merriest of seasons and close out the fall term as students prepare for final exams.
