The success of every student is the focus of everything we do.

There are several bits of news that came in after I pushed the button to send The Talon earlier this week.  To keep you up-to-date:
Math tutor available, Staton Center
Ms. Jessica Curry, wife of Mathematics Program coordinator and assistant professor of mathematics Dr. Clinton Curry, has been employed to tutor students in mathematics via the Staton Center for Learning Enrichment. Times and places:  Mondays, 7:00–8:00 p.m. Bellingrath 302; Tuesday–Friday, Jackson 109, 1:00–2:00 p.m.  It's free! Simply go at the specified time and ask for help.  (It's also a good idea to speak with your mathematics professor so that he or she is aware of any special needs you have.)
The Writing Center is open
Need help with writing?  The Writing Center is open and ready to help.  See Jamie Brazell ' 09 in the Staton Center.  Writing Center hours are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Jackson 112.  Assistance is free.
Physical Science, Physics, and Chemistry help available
A list of tutors who will work with students who need an extra boost in physical science or physics is available by contacting Professor Jaime Demick at  If you need extra help in first-year chemistry, Dr. Maureen Kendrick Murphy '78 has arranged for a number of Chemistry Wizards (upper-level chemistry students who serve as tutors and mentors) to help students.  No cost.  Contact Dr. Murphy at
Whitewater rafting trip planned
The Office of Student Life/Campus Recreation is planning an overnight whitewater rafting trip to the Ocoee River in Tennessee, October 4–5.  The cost is $45 per person.  Students may register with Nick Sheppard '13 in The Hut (while spaces last—sign up now).
Tennis Tournament this weekend
This weekend's inaugural John McWilliams Fall Invitational Tennis Tournament is set up a bit differently than most.  Rather than dual matches, number 1 seeds will compete in singles/doubles matches, etc.  Play begins today at 2:00 p.m. at Lagoon Park and continues Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and Sunday at 9:00 a.m., with varsity players beginning play and JV following approximately three hours later each day. In addition to Huntingdon, Millsaps, Point, and Birmingham-Southern will participate. Admission is free.
Football, Volleyball simulcasts
Commentary for the Hawks football games, both home and away, will be provided by Kyle J. Eller '10 and Walt Cobb '16 at this Web link:—this includes commentary for Saturday's football season opener at Mississippi College, with pregame at 5:30 and kick-off at 6:00 p.m. CDT.  Kyle will also simulcast commentary for the volleyball match at home versus Agnes Scott College September 17 at 6:00 pm. CDT.

Bring a prospective student to Host Day
Host Day coincides with Family Weekend and Homecoming, so if you're coming to campus anyway bring along a prospective student whose future could be enriched through the Huntingdon experience.  Host Day is Saturday, September 28, 8:00 a.m. to noon.  Call the Office of Admission for reservations at (334) 833-4497.

YMCA membership discounts available
Huntingdon students may sign up for YMCA memberships and pay through the College rather than at the Y.  By doing so, the initial sign-up fee of $50 is waived and the student is provided a 10% discount on the normal $40 monthly fee.  Payment is monthly at the Office of Student Financial Services.  To sign up, pick up the paperwork at one of the Ys in town, complete it and turn it in with your check to Karen Graham in SFS, Wilson Building.
Death in the family
Our sympathies and prayers are extended to Jeff Pinkerton, a member of the maintenance staff, and his family on the death of Jeff's mother, Johnnie Pearl "Nooks" Brown Pinkerton, Saturday, September 7.  A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 14, at 11:00 a.m. at Beulah Baptist Church.  Visitation will precede the service, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
The Talon is produced by the Office of Communications and is e-mailed to students, faculty, and staff, and to those parents, friends, neighbors, alumni, and others who have requested to receive it.  If you would like to change your e-mail address or be added to or removed from the list, simply send your request to Su Ofe at (be sure to include your relationship to the College so that you can be added to the correct list).
