Huntingdon to Honor Mathison for Alumni Achievement During Homecoming, 2005

Montgomery, AL—Huntingdon College will honor the Reverend Dr. George Mathison, of Auburn, as one of three Alumni Achievement Award winners during Homecoming, 2005, April 15–17 on the Huntingdon College Campus. Award winners were nominated from all walks of the Huntingdon community and selected by the College's National Alumni Board.

Dr. Mathison completed his Master of Divinity degree at Emory University and his doctoral studies through Sewanee-Vanderbilt Joint Doctor of Ministry Coalition. He served as a research fellow in Biblical Homiletics at Yale University. He has served as senior minister of Auburn United Methodist Church since 1990. Prior to this appointment, he served for 12 years at Saraland United Methodist Church, and for 8 years at Kingswood United Methodist Church. He is a former chaplain for the Auburn football team, and the current chaplain for the Auburn Fire Department.

In 2004, Dr. Mathison was honored as the Auburn Citizen of the Year. An avid tennis enthusiast, he is currently ranked number one in his age division in the United States Tennis Association. He is the author of six books of inspiration, all proceeds of which have been donated to charities such as Habitat for Humanity. He served as a member of the Huntingdon College Board of Trustees for 10 years. Huntingdon received numerous letters of support for Dr. Mathison's nomination, many of which praised his warmth, depth of compassion, and caring spirit, and described him as “one of the most effective leaders and pastors in our denomination,” and as being “the most Christ-like person I have ever known.”

Alumni Achievement awards will be given during the Alumni Awards Banquet, Friday, April 15, 2005. For ticket information, contact the Huntingdon College Alumni Advancement Office at (334) 833-4564.
