Through the Departmental Honors program, outstanding students have the opportunity to create individualized honors projects within their majors in order to explore more fully a particular need or interest. To be eligible to apply for Departmental Honors, you must be a senior, or, in exceptional cases, a junior, who has a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 in all subjects or a GPA of 3.20 in all subjects and an average of at least 3.60 in the major subject.
Separate from Departmental Honors, eligible students who seek additional rigor in the general academic experience may participate in all or part of the College's Honors Program.
The Application Process
- Meet with a faculty member or your academic adviser to discuss your honors project idea and obtain permission from a faculty member who will serve as the director of your honors project.
- Before the semester in which the project will be pursued, submit a written application, available in and returnable to the Office of the Registrar, which has been signed by the director of your project and your department chair.
- Applications are reviewed by the Faculty Honors Committee. Approved participants who earn a grade of “A” or “B” in Honors 491 and earn a final cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 in all subjects will receive recognition for Departmental Honors at graduation.
- For more information, consult the Office of the Registrar.
