Huntingdon Volleyball Split on Opening Day in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Huntingdon volleyball team splits two matches at the Hilltop Classic, defeating Rust 3-0 and falling to Rhodes, 3-2.

Huntingdon (1-1) opened the season with a win against Rust College, 25-17, 25-17, 25-17. Junior Abby Carter led the team with 10 kills, while senior Clare Shannon added 8. Junior Alyssa Eason tallied 20 assists to pace the squad.

Defensively, senior Krissie Jones notched a match-high 10 digs, while freshman Kelly Kahumoku chipped in 7. Junior Abby Carter posted one solo block in the match.

Shannon led the team with four service aces in the match.

In the second contest against the Rhodes, the Lady Hawks fell short in the final set, 24-26, 25-21, 15-25, 25-22, 13-15.

Junior Abby Carter led the team with 10 kills, while senior Clare Shannon added 9. Shannon, a Birmingham native, reached the 1,000th kill milestone in her hometown on Saturday. Junior Alyssa Eason tallied 21 assists to pace the squad.

Defensively, senior Krissie Jones notched a match-high 23 digs, with senior Clare Shannon chipping in 18. Abby Carter posted three solo block and six block assists, while Shannon and Eason each added three block assists.

Senior Clare Shannon contributed three service aces.

Huntingdon returns to action today, Sept. 5th, taking on Sewanee at 10 a.m. and Birmingham-Southern at 5:30 p.m. at the Hilltop Classic in Birmingham, Ala.
