Huntingdon Basketball Sweeps Covenant College

MONTGOMERY, Ala.—The Huntingdon College men’s  and women’s basketball teams defeated Covenant College in a doubleheader at Catherine Dixon Roland Arena Wednesday evening.  The women won 59-52 and the men won 73-51.

In the women’s game, the Lady Hawks were led by junior LaTerial Williams on a 15-point 7-rebound performance.  Senior Kayla Northington and freshman Raven Prater each added 11 points, and senior Ashton Salter pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

The first half of the game saw poor shooting from both sides, resulting in a 19-16 halftime lead by Covenant.  To begin the second half, Covenant increased their lead to five points before the Lady Hawks took the lead on a LaTerial Williams three-point basket just under five minutes into the last period.  Covenant quickly tied the game, and Northington’s jumper at the 14:35 mark gave the Lady Hawks the lead for good.  Covenant came no closer than eight points for the remainder of game, with Huntingdon’s biggest lead stretching to 14.

For the game, Covenant held the advantage on the glass, 42-33.  However, the Lady Hawks had the edge in field goal percentage, 35 percent to32 percent; three-point percentage, 35 percent to 28 percent; and at the foul line, 82 percent to 52 percent.

In the men’s game, Great South Athletic Conference player of the week Adrian Williams had another noteworthy performance as he poured in 24 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 blocks in only 21 minutes of work.  Senior Ephriam Hudson finished with 10 points and 7 rebounds.

The Hawks jumped out of the gates early with an 11-point lead in the first five minutes of play, a lead which they would control for the entire game.  Their largest lead of 34 points came in the second half on a layup by freshman Jason Varney with 8 minutes remaining.

For the game, the Hawks out-rebounded the Scots 46-27 and shot 49.2 percent (32-65).

Huntingdon returns to action this Saturday, January 29, as they host conference rival Piedmont College in a Great South doubleheader.  The Lady Hawks tip-off at 2pm, followed by the men at 4pm.
