Baseball's Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short, 9-7, to Capital

MONTOGOMERY, Ala. --- The Huntingdon College baseball team's ninth inning rally fell two-runs short, 9-7, against Capital University Friday evening at Posey Field.

Sophomore Caleb Astin and freshman Joseph Odom paced the Hawks at the plate going 2-for-3, while Odom recorded two RBI's in Huntingdon's third loss of the season.

Huntingdon (8-3) got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning from four hits. Sophomore Caleb Astin led off the Hawks with a single to left field before stealing second base. Freshman Joseph Odom's single to left field drove in Astin giving Huntingdon the 1-0 lead. Odom stole second base followed by junior Chad Baxley's single giving the Hawks runners on the corners with one out. Senior Miles Walding laid down an RBI bunt sending Odom across home plate extending the Hawks lead 2-0.

Capital (1-0) ended senior Sam Griffin's outing in the top of the 5th inning with six runs on six hits with one Hawks' error. The Crusaders finished the fifth up 6-2 over Huntingdon.

The Hawks cut the deficit down 6-4 after scoring two runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Huntingdon's Walding started the inning off reaching first base from a throwing error. Senior Stephen Bishop's single to left field drove in Walding, 6-3, before sophomore Keegan Lambeth's ground out moved Bishop over to second base with one out. Senior Drew Harrell doubled to to right field driving in Bishop for the final run of the inning, 6-4.

The Crusaders added to the margin in the top of the 6th inning scoring three runs on one hit. Huntingdon's fielding error at third base with two outs opened the door for Capitals' 9-4 advantage.

Huntingdon cut the lead down to four runs, 9-5, when Walding scored from third base on a passed ball. However, the Hawks left two men on base after starting the inning with base-runners from a walk and hit by pitch.

The Hawks final comeback attempt fell short in the bottom of the 9th inning. Astin's two-out single through the left side scored Harrell from second base pulling the Hawks within three-runs, 9-6. Odom followed Astin with an RBI single to center field driving in White from second base, 9-7. Huntingdon's rally ended on a ground out to third base.

Senior Sam Griffin (1-1) pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing 6 total runs (3 earned) on 8 hits with three strike outs in his first loss of the season. Juniors Josh Knuth and Caleb Cofield came in relief for Griffin each recording one strike out.

Huntingdon returns to the diamond Saturday, Feb. 26, for the second game against Capital beginning at 2 p.m.
