CLARKESVILLE, Ga. --- In the first-ever Great South Athletic Conference Tournament, Huntingdon College's women's golf team finished second while the fifth-ranked Hawks fell to a disappointing fourth place finish at the Orchards Golf Course hosted by Piedmont College. Freshman Cates Culpepper's 9th place finished landed him the GSAC Freshman of the Year honor on Tuesday afternoon.
On the men's side, Maryville College took home the GSAC title after carding a tournament-low total of 602. LaGrange's Hudson Keener received the men's Player of the Year honor after firing a individual-low total of 141 in the two day tournament.
Huntingdon (617) shot a final round 315 falling to 4th place and 15-strokes behind the winners Maryville. Seniors Chase Blaich and J.P. Kircher led the Hawks with 7th and 8th place finishes, respectively. Blaich finished the tournament with a 153 total following a second round five-over par, 77. Kircher trailed Blaich by one-stroke after shooting a six-over par, 78, bringing his tournament total to 154.
Culpepper received the GSAC Freshman of the Year and All-Freshman honors following a two day total of 155 finishing tied for 9th place. Rodes Bowers also was awarded to the GSAC All-Freshman team following a tournament total of 157 tied for 14th place. Freshman Jamey Lester completed the Hawks' scoring after placing tied for 23rd with a two round total of 164.
Despite the tough finish, the Hawks will wait to find out if they receive a bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships on Monday, May 2.
On the women's side, the Lady Hawks (702) finished second place behind GSAC champion Piedmont College (648) on Tuesday afternoon at the Orchards Golf Course. The second place finish at the GSAC tournament concludes the Lady Hawks 2010-11 season.
Huntingdon's Saem Hur finished the two-day tournament with a team-best 161. Hur's third place finish earned her a spot on the GSAC All-Conference team as well as the All-Freshman team. Ali Hamil finished five-strokes behind Hur with a 166 total in 4th place. Hamil also received GSAC All-Conference honors on Tuesday afternoon for the Lady Hawks.
Alex Foster finished tied for 7th place with a tournament total of 182 followed by Kaitlin Rozof's 12th place finish with a 194. Rozof was recognized for her performance in the classroom as a member of the GSAC All-Academic team. Meg McGuire rounded out the Lady Hawks' scoring with a total of 196, two-strokes behind Rozof in 13th place.
