Grants

Grants are a type of financial aid that does not have to be repaid, and are typically based on demonstrated need. The following information pertains to undergraduate enrollment only.

Federal Pell Grant

The Federal Pell Grant is a federally-funded grant awarded on the basis on financial need.  The Federal Pell Grant is awarded to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor’s or a professional degree. The amount of Pell Grant awarded can change from year-to-year, and is contingent on the following:

• Your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) determined by the FAFSA results.
• Your financial need.
• Your plans to attend school for a full academic year or less.
• Your status as a full-time or part-time student.  The Pell Grant is awarded based on full-time enrollment (12 or greater undergraduate hours), and is prorated based on enrollment for less than full-time enrollment.

 You may not receive Pell Grant funds from more than one school at a time.

Pell Grant funds may not be received for more than the equivalent of six full-time academic years.

Eligibility

• You must complete the FAFSA.
• You must have a qualifying Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as determined by your FAFSA.
• You must meet and maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress.
• You must meet all other financial aid eligibility requirements.
• You must be classified as an undergraduate student.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

The Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is a federally-funded grant awarded to undergraduate students based on exceptional need and availability of funds.  Funding for the FSEOG is limited each year, therefore not all eligible aid applicants can be offered an award from the program.  Priority consideration during the initial awarding period is given to day students who complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1 and who have a zero EFC.

Eligibility

• You must complete the FAFSA.
• You must be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant.
• You must meet and maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress
• You must meet all other financial aid eligibility requirements.
• You must be enrolled at least half-time (6 undergraduate hours)
• You must be classified as an undergraduate student.

Federal TEACH Grant

The TEACH Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 a year to students who are completing or plan to complete coursework needed to begin a career in teaching. 

As a condition for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve in which you agree to (among other requirements) teach

• in a high-need field 
• at an elementary school, secondary school, or educational service agency that serves students from low-income families
• for at least four complete academic years within eight years after completing (or ceasing enrollment in) the course of study for which you received the grant. 

IMPORTANT:  If you do not complete your service obligation, all TEACH Grant funds you received will be converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan.  You must then repay this loan to the U.S. Department of Education, with interest charged from the date the TEACH Grant was disbursed (paid to you or on your behalf).

Alabama Student Assistance Program (ASAP)

The Alabama Student Assistance Program (ASAP) Grant is a state-funded grant for undergraduate students awarded based on exceptional need and availability of funds.  Funding for the ASAP Grant is limited each year, therefore not all eligible aid applicants can be offered an award from the program. Awarding is done by the Office of Student Financial Services. Priority consideration during the initial awarding period is given to day students who complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1 and who have a zero EFC.

Eligibility

• You must complete the FAFSA.
• You must be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant.
• You must meet and maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress.
• You must meet all other financial aid eligibility requirements.
• You must be enrolled full-time.
• You must be classified as an undergraduate student.

Alabama Student Grant Program (ASGP)

The Alabama Student Grant Program is a state student assistance program established August 4, 1978, by the Legislature of the State of Alabama and designed to provide financial assistance to residents of the State of Alabama for undergraduate nonsectarian, secular education at independent, nonprofit, or other legislatively identified postsecondary educational institutions of higher learning located within the State of Alabama.

Eligibility

• Have obtained a certificate of graduation from a secondary school or the recognized equivalence of such graduation;
• Be classified as an undergraduate student;
• Be an Alabama resident as defined in Alabama Student Grant Program Act 90
• Be a citizen of the United States or in the process of becoming a citizen of the United States;
• Be enrolled as a full-time or half-time student in an eligible program in an approved institution;
• Be making satisfactory academic progress; and,
• Not be enrolled and not intend to enroll in a course of study leading to an undergraduate degree in theology, divinity, or other field of preparation for a religious vocation.
• You must be classified as an undergraduate student.

Complete the Alabama Student Grant Application and return it to the Office of Student Financial Services by the deadline if you are eligible to receive this award.

Alabama National Guard Education Assistance Program (ANGEAP)

The Alabama National Guard Educational Assistance Program (ANGEAP) is a state assistance program established by the Legislature of the State of Alabama and is designed to provide financial assistance established to National Guard members who are residents of Alabama and enrolled in a certificate program at an accredited community or technical college or a degree program at an accredited postsecondary institution of higher learning located within the State of Alabama.

The ANGEAP award amounts will be determined based on the outstanding balance of tuition and fees remaining after all other benefits the student is using are applied. Applications are available from Alabama National Guard units. Funds are limited, so students who are Guard members are encouraged to apply early. Forms must be submitted to the financial aid office each semester the student plans to attend. Completed applications will then be forwarded to a representative of the Alabama Military Department for approval.

Eligibility

• 17 years of age or over 
• Alabama resident 
• Active member in good standing with the Alabama National Guard 
• Active member of a federally recognized unit of the Alabama National Guard 
• Have completed basic training 
• Pursuing the first undergraduate program
• Enrolled in a certificate or degree program at an accredited community college or technical college within the State of Alabama
• Maintain a cumulative 2.00 GPA Undergraduate
• Must have the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file 

Must demonstrate a financial need of at least $100.00.
