A Day in the Life of a Huntingdon Hawk: Sacoria Garvin ’26
Montgomery, AL – Sacoria Garvin is a junior from Montgomery, Alabama. She took some time on Saturday, October 5 to share a typical home football gameday as a student and Huntingdon College Cheerleader.
“I woke up at 6:00 a.m. and before I began my day, I made sure to thank God for giving me breath this morning. I washed my face, brushed my teeth and walked to the kitchen to enjoy a cup of tea with my parents. I never eat breakfast on a game day because I save my appetite for tailgating.
After conversing with my parents, my mom and I packed up and drove over to Huntingdon at 8:00 a.m. to set up my family’s tailgate and to watch the band practice on the field. After setting up, I went back home to get glammed up for the game!
At 8:40 a.m. I started getting ready. I took a long aromatic shower with gospel music to calm my mind in preparation for the game (my favorite Gospel singer is Yolanda Adams). I then took about 30 minutes to do my skincare routine so that my makeup will lay perfectly all day in the sun. Afterwards, I sculpted the best game day look for hair and makeup. I was so excited to wear a pink ribbon in my hair for this game! Every year during breast cancer awareness month in October, we wear a pink hair ribbon and use pretty pink pom-poms instead of our usual white and red. Once I felt like Beyonce with my look, I put my uniform on and left the house.
Around 9:50 a.m. I arrived at the W. James Samford Stadium and joined my teammates for stretching and stunting. My favorite part of cheerleading is stunting. I am a flyer, and my favorite stunt is Flipper because it’s a constant flow of motions unlike other stunts that rely on counts. Once we finished stunting, we prayed and dismissed to relax and bond before the Hawk Walk. During this time, I took pictures with my friends and family for my gameday social media post.
At 10:45 a.m., the cheer team met the Marching Scarlet and Grey band at the Hawk Walk across Fairview Avenue. We line the crosswalk and welcome our football team to the field with cheers and the fight song.
After the Hawk Walk, my teammates and I tailgated with our parents. Every home game, our parents get together and make wonderful meals for us to enjoy before kickoff. Once we finished eating, we relaxed until the field show. During the pre-game field show we join the band on the field to hype up the crowd and welcome the football team!
From 1:00 p.m. to around 4:00 p.m. we cheered on the team to victory, 45 – 31 against Belhaven! My favorite cheer is HC Hawks because it is our most energetic cheer and gets the crowd and band involved. It was a very hot game, but the final score made it all worthwhile!
After the game, my friends and I went to Eastchase to celebrate the amazing win! We had dinner at The Juicy Crab and ended the night by making stuffed animals at Build-A-Bear. I made a brown bear with a Nightmare Before Christmas outfit. (Nightmare before Christmas is my favorite movie!)
I made it home around 8:00 p.m. but there’s always schoolwork to be done as an English major with a double minor in criminal justice and psychology. I opened my computer to check my email and Canvas to review the homework assignments and class readings. I confirmed that I was caught up, so I started working on my research summary that is due next week in Dr. Abrams’ criminal justice class. After finishing my summary around 9:30 p.m., I started my nighttime ritual of skincare, outfit prep for the next day, and nightly devotion to help me wind down from an exhausting and hectic day. After an episode of SpongeBob, I fell asleep.
Today was a good day!”
