A Day in the Life of a Huntingdon Hawk: DeJon Gibby ’26
Montgomery, AL – DeJon Gibby is a junior accounting major from Montgomery, Alabama. He is in the Huntingdon Band, SGA, the Black Student Union, Kappa Kappa Psi, and he is a Huntingdon Ambassador. “Gibby” as he is known on campus, took HC News through his day on February 11 as he prepared for a BSU event and an upcoming band concert.
“I woke up around 8:30 a.m. with a morning prayer then I checked my phone notifications. I got out of bed to get ready to join my online accounting class at 9:30 with Professor Makoko. After class, I got dressed and headed to the campus. Today was not my normal attire. I decided to wear a suit because I was invited to a special dinner hosted by President Anthony Leigh for the Black History Month Art Exhibit.
Once I arrived on campus, I went to the Band Rehearsal Hall in Roland to talk with my director. There are some fellow members that are really showing a lot of service and dedication to the band, and I wanted to brag on them to make sure their efforts were being seen. After a few errands, I returned to campus to get an hour of work study. That hour consisted of filing folders in the Admission Office. I’ve worked there since freshmen year with Mrs. Tabitha Smith. She’s an amazing supervisor that works around my busy schedule.
Once I finished my project for work study, I headed to the library to start chapter 3 of my Government and Not-for-Profit Accounting homework. This class is a bit tricky, but it helps when I can rewatch the videos that Professor Ford makes for us to recap. I always look for a quiet space in the library to study so I won’t be disturbed or disturb others. Today I studied in the film room off of the atrium.
I took a break from chapter 3 and ran off campus before practice to get something small from McDonalds to hold me over until the dinner. Band practice started at 4:30. I arrived and picked up my music and my euphonium and went to my seat. Today we played two pieces, “Fate of the Gods” and “Industrial” (may favorite one.) These are pieces we will play in our March concert.
I left around 5:10 to go to President Leigh’s office to meet tonight’s featured artist, Tori Jackson, and her husband. President Leigh hosted a dinner in her honor and invited several leaders from the Black Student Union to attend. We had a great time talking over dinner and dessert. During the conversation, Tori’s husband brought up the topic of relating to our vocation in life. Ariel Dixon ’25 commented that God has everything in life planned out for us so we shouldn’t be worried, and Isaiah Matthews ’27 mentioned that his mom always instilled in him Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This conversation about art and life was an unexpected reminder today that God will not abandon us. Once the dinner was over, we took a few pictures and then walked to Seay Twins Art Gallery to see the amazing work that Tori created. A lot of people showed up to support her and to learn about her work and her time at Huntingdon as a student.
After the event, I drove home to finish the homework I started in the library and I took an online test for my management class with Dr. Moussalli. I ended the night with a personal Bible study and I watched Law and Order SVU before falling asleep.”
