The Solomon Amendment
The Solomon Amendment, a federal law, mandates that institutions receiving certain federal agency funding must fulfill military recruitment requests for access to campus and for lists containing student recruitment information. Failure to comply may result in the loss of federal funding including various forms of federal student aid.
The Solomon Amendment allows personally identifiable student information to be released to recruiters that would have been denied them under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). The Solomon Amendment supersedes FERPA. Solomon is based on the definition of “Student Recruitment Information.”
Huntingdon College defines “Student Recruitment Information” as:
- Student’s Name
- Address (local, permanent)
- Telephone number (local, permanent)
- Student’s Age
- Major
- Class Level (e.g. Freshman, Sophomore)
- Degree awarded
Information released is limited to the current or preceding semester. If the request is received between semesters, the request must indicate previous or upcoming semester.
Students who have requested that their directory information be withheld under FERPA, will also have this privacy protection honored under Solomon

Requesting Recruitment Information
Military Recruiters should submit their Solomon requests to the Registrar’s Office by completing a “Solomon Amendment Request for Information” order form.
