2024-25 FAFSA Changes—How the FAFSA Simplification Act Affects You for 2025-2026

Big changes took place with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2024-2025 aid year! The FAFSA Simplification Act was passed by Congress in 2020 and represented a significant overhaul of the processes and systems used to award federal student aid. This included the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, the need analysis that determined federal aid eligibility, changed some terminology, and many policies and procedures for schools that participate in federal student aid programs.

Historically, the FAFSA has been available beginning October 1 each year. However, because of significant changes to the application and the rebuild of the FAFSA processing system, the 2024-25 FAFSA was not available until December 31, 2023. The Department of Education is launching the 2025-2026 FAFSA in a test format to some institutions starting October 1, 2024. The 2025-2026 FAFSA will not be available to Huntingdon College until December 1, 2024.
