Huntingdon Biochemistry Program Receives ASBMB Reaccreditation

Montgomery, AL – The Huntingdon College biochemistry program has received reaccreditation from the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The College was notified in January 2025 that the accreditation is for a full seven-year term, through December 2031. The College’s prior accreditation term was from 2018 to 2024.

ASBMB has accredited college biochemistry and molecular biology programs at nearly 120 colleges. Huntingdon remains the only college or university in Alabama to hold this accreditation, which assesses the program based on three program areas: curriculum, faculty, and infrastructure. With the accreditation, Huntingdon biochemistry graduates will continue to have a degree certified with the ASBMB. This affirms to graduate programs and future employers that the student has completed a program that meets the expectations of the ASBMB including the highest standards of quality and innovation in a biochemistry and molecular biology education, a curriculum that aligns with fundamental concepts of critical reasoning skills, and research or cooperative experiences and internships.

In issuing Huntingdon’s reaccreditation, the biochemistry program was noted for:

  • Outstanding training in the ethical conduct of research.
  • The number of major contributing faculty members with post-doctoral training.
  • The coverage of the core curriculum and underlying concepts as defined by the ASBMB.

The news was met with high praise from the Huntingdon College administration. Huntingdon College Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean for Faculty, Dr. Sarah Conrad Sours, stated, “ASBMB has high standards—for faculty excellence, for program quality, for institutional integrity—and our biochemistry faculty consistently strive to embody those educational values. I am especially pleased at their recognition of the quality of our faculty and our focus on research ethics.”

Huntingdon College President, Dr. Anthony Leigh, also commented on the accreditation confirmation, “This reaccreditation is further evidence that Huntingdon is one of the South’s premier pre-professional colleges. Our track record of preparing biochemistry students for admission into medical doctoral and master’s degree programs and jobs in their field of study is impressive. I am grateful to our faculty and academic leadership for their excellent work in preparing biochemistry students for their next step beyond Huntingdon.”

Huntingdon College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. ASBMBis a national, major-specific accreditation in addition to SACSCOC accreditation.
