Huntingdon to Honor the Teacher of the Year

Montgomery, AL – Mrs. Deborah Stringfellow, a local elementary teacher and Huntingdon College mentor was recently honored as the Alabama Teacher of the Year. The Huntingdon College Teacher Education Department in partnership with Huntingdon President Anthony Leigh and his wife, Wendy Leigh, will honor Mrs. Stringfellow on September 6 at 9:30 a.m. in Flowers Hall and Ligon Chapel. The recognition and meet-and-greet is part of the President’s “The Year of the Educator” initiative to highlight teachers and administrators not only in the Huntingdon family but across the state of Alabama.

Mrs. Stringfellow was selected in June as the state’s winner out of the more than 40,000 educators in Alabama. She is a fourth-grade teacher at Airport Road Intermediate School in Millbrook and has served in education for over 40 years. Dr. Deanna McKinley, Instructor of Teacher Education at Huntingdon College commented, “At Huntingdon, we refer to educators as world changers and look forward to honoring Mrs. Stringfellow, the ultimate world changer.”

While teaching in the River Region, Mrs. Stringfellow has been a mentor to several of Huntingdon’s teacher education students during their classroom requirements. Her story and message of hard work and devotion to her calling is inspirational not only to those working in education or aspiring to be teachers, but to everyone.

“Wendy and I are thrilled to welcome Deborah Stringfellow to Huntingdon to celebrate her life of service to students,” stated President Leigh. “Teachers are heroes in communities across Alabama, and there are hundreds of Huntingdon alumni who serve as educators in Alabama alongside Mrs. Stringfellow to prepare the next generation of leaders for Alabama.  Mrs. Stringfellow represents all of the women and men across Alabama who devote their lives to their students and I can’t wait for our campus community to meet her.”

The festivities will include a welcome at 9:30 a.m. followed by the presentation at 10:00 a.m. The event will conclude with a question-and-answer session and refreshments. The event is free and open to Huntingdon College and the community.
