Student Groups Live Out College Motto by Volunteering with Heart of Alabama Food Bank
Montgomery, AL – Huntingdon College students have always had a heart for serving the community. Their actions are a direct connection to the Huntingdon motto engraved above Flowers Hall; Enter to grow in wisdom, go forth to apply wisdom in service. In 2024, Huntingdon student groups found a call to support and assist at the Heart of Alabama Food Bank in Montgomery, AL. Last semester and over the summer, Hawks Football and Hawks Softball gave their time to work at the facility. This semester, two more groups have championed the local non-profit.
The Huntingdon College Panhellenic women joined together on Friday, October 4 to give their time and energy packing boxes of frozen foods to be distributed across the River Region. On Monday, October 7, the Presidential Scholars Community Engagement Team welcomed to campus two food bank staff members, Candace Carnegie ’21 and Brittany Parrott, to learn about the operations, who Heart of Alabama serves, and how volunteers can help. The Scholars team followed up their education on Friday, October 11 with a trip to the food bank to sort canned and dry goods.
Kailey Hicks ’24 attended the Panhellenic service day. In her words, “The motto is an important call to action to be more aware of the world around us not only while we are at Huntingdon but after graduation. We are not meant to keep our knowledge and our abilities to ourselves, but rather we are called to share those gifts with our school and our community. My time at the food bank was an important reminder that even a day of giving back can make a significant impact on someone else’s life.”
Candace Carnegie ’21, Huntingdon alumna and Digital Media Specialist at the food bank is impressed by the interest and support of Huntingdon students. She commented, “It has been truly amazing to have my alma mater give their time and service to the Heart of Alabama Food Bank! Huntingdon’s mission of applying wisdom in service is genuinely represented and shows the action behind the mission.”
The Heart of Alabama Food Bank serves the 12-county River Region in Central Alabama. Their mission is to source, acquire, and distribute nutritious food to those experiencing hunger and food insecurities throughout the region, so that families, seniors, and children can thrive.
